ADHD Medication and Autism

Writer: Liz HarlanLiz Harlan

I have discovered something interesting and I thought I would share for people that might find it helpful.

Two and a half years ago, I was diagnosed with both autism and ADHD. At the time I was started on medication for the ADHD. It has been so incredibly helpful and I am so grateful for it.

Something interesting started happening, though. I noticed some of my autistic traits becoming more evident. I am not sure how else to say it other than I felt like I was getting "more autistic," which really isn't a thing, but, well, maybe I should just describe it.

I started getting more sensitive to sensations like smell and hearing. I started to enjoy my time by myself more and more. I felt myself drawing more in on myself. I also found myself getting more into subjects that I was interested in.

And then I read an article in ADDitude magazine and things all came together for me. It appears that my experience was not unusual. That was I was experiencing was actually due to my ADHD medication. What?

It seems that what happens is that when you are taking your ADHD medication, your ADHD symptoms quiet down, so to speak. That means that your autism traits have more room to play, so to speak. It seems so simple, but I never thought of it.

Anyway, I just thought I would share in case someone runs into this.

God's Blessings,

Liz
